The “diversity hackathon” is a compressed version of the Design Sprint. The one-day workshop aims to develop innovative solutions to increase inclusion regarding various diversity aspects using creative techniques and human-centered design. The NGO “Be You Network”, in collaboration with the City of Bern, holds an annual “Swiss Diversity Hackathon”, in which people from business, politics, and equality work can participate. This event can serve as a template for further applications.
Participants in a “diversity hackathon” develop innovative solutions to increase diversity and inclusion in various areas. Promising project ideas can then be followed up and implemented.
By sending employees from their research & development departments to the “Swiss Diversity Hackathon”, companies engage in a social innovation process and signal to the public that diversity is essential. Participants gain initial insights into the application of Design Thinking techniques, are sensitized to diversity aspects, and are given the opportunity to expand their networks.
Implementing a company-internal diversity hackathon is more complex and costly but can trigger sustainable transformation and cultural change.
